Mountain Valley View Farm is proud to be a small, family owned and operated farm dedicated to raising beautiful Icelandic horses and growing fresh, organic produce that we sell at local farmers’ markets. We also have a small herd of Nubian dairy goats and Babydoll Southdown sheep that provide us with rich, creamy milk from which we craft a line of delicious artisan cheeses and handmade soaps that nourish and rejuvenate the skin.
Our Getaway Studio features a beautiful Bed & Breakfast where you can relax in a peaceful country setting, as well as the Dining Room that is open year-round for catering, hosting small dinner parties, and cooking classes taught by Karen Jean Matsko Hood, author of the popular Cookbook Delights series.
In our fully-licensed commercial kitchen, we use time-honored family recipes to make small batches of scrumptious artisan baked goods, candies, jams, jellies, fruit butters, and syrups from high quality local and organic ingredients that have a fresh, unbeatable taste. We also craft lovely gift items, including cookie and soup mixes packaged attractively in jars, sachets of lavender and potpourri, and our signature potpourri strings that add a decorative touch to any room.

Spokane Mourns the Loss of a Landmark
Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle, a beloved restaurant and landmark in Spokane’s Garland District, burned to the ground on the night of September 25. The fire also destroyed Ferguson’s Café next door, and was so large and difficult to contain that it took 50 firemen almost two hours to put it out. Both restaurants were featured in the 1993 movie Benny and Joon, and the Milk Bottle in particular has come to be nationally known as an iconic location in Spokane.
The Milk Bottle was built in 1935 as a retail store for the Benewah Dairy. At 38 feet tall and 15 feet wide, it is one of a handful of giant milk bottle buildings scattered around the United States—and one of the most famous. The dairy closed down in the early 70’s, leaving the Milk Bottle unused until 1994, when it reopened as Mary Lou’s restaurant, serving some of the best local burgers, thick-cut fries, and delicious homemade ice cream. Mary Lou’s has been a favorite among North Spokane residents ever since, and their ice cream became so popular that it was served in other local restaurants around town. The restaurant had an old-fashioned charm to its décor, with black and white checkered tile floor, historic photos displayed on the walls, and 50’s style bar stools at the front counter. At first, the Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle was open only for lunch, but the past two summers their hours were extended into the mid-evening so that locals could grab an ice cream cone to cool down on a hot summer night. Many people around Spokane have fond memories of both the Milk Bottle and Ferguson’s Café and have been devastated to learn that they are gone, describing it as a heartbreaking loss for the city.
Update: Although the Ferguson’s building has been deemed a total loss, the Milk Bottle is still structurally intact. The owners of both restaurants state that they have plans to rebuild. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.
Happy 4th of July!!
Can you believe it? This weekend is the 4th of July holiday already. I guess our cool spring made us not realize how far into summer we are. And the weather is gorgeous!
For everyone who survived Hoop Fest 2011 this past weekend, we’re headed for a weekend even warmer.
Ice cold drinks, BBQ, and watermelon … is anything more American? And fireworks … don’t we have some crazy holiday traditions? My family is into every holiday in a big way, and the independence of the greatest nation on earth is no exception. This is one day to celebrate all the fantastic benefits we enjoy in the U.S.A. Proudly wave our national flag. We have freedoms found in very few places on earth. Sometimes we get myopic and focus only on the negative or controversial aspects of the politics of our phenomenal republic.
We are able to judge our leaders and all aspects of the American-way of governance. Thank the Lord that we have such freedoms. Looking critically at our laws and leaders only makes us stronger. No one and nothing is perfect so, with constant effort, we can continue to improve the concept of liberty. Our Constitution is a great framework to point us in the right direction with the freedoms expressed within. I am always amazed that the document on which our country is based can, throughout our 235 year history, still clearly guide us.
We are truly fortunate to have such a strong anchor or safeguard to our liberty as the Constitution of the United States of America.
Take time during this holiday from the normal work week and show gratitude to our forefathers and our military, which have made us and keep us a free nation. It is a simple task to be patriotic in this the United States of America.
Thank God for the United States of America!
Thank for reading and blogging!

Dairy Products from Mountain Valley View Farm

The delicious, creamy milk produced by our Nubian dairy goats and East Friesian sheep is not only gentle on the stomach and naturally more nutritious than cow milk, it is also raw and organic.
Benefits of Raw, Organic Milk
Raw milk comes fresh from the animal, unpasteurized and unhomogenized. Organic milk comes from healthy animals that have never been given growth hormones and are fed a natural grass diet free from pesticides and other chemicals. Both raw milk and organic milk have significant health benefits, and the goat milk provided by Mountain Valley View Farm is both.
Many people are already aware of the factors in favor of organic milk: a tasty beverage that is free of chemicals (particularly pesticides) that accumulate in the body, causing an increased risk in cancer and other health problems. Organic milk is also higher in nutrients, particularly Vitamin A, beta-carotene, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. But not everyone is aware that the health benefits of raw, unpasteurized milk go even deeper. The pasteurization process uses extreme heat to kill all bacteria found in raw milk; however, this also kills all of the good bacteria that aid in digestion and destroys the naturally occurring enzymes that make raw milk so nutritious. Furthermore, in removing fat from the milk, commercially processed dairy is lacking in significant portions of fat-soluble vitamins and triglycerides—good fats that the body needs. Even more importantly, pasteurization destroys the immunoglobins (antibodies) in raw milk that provide a boost to the immune system that can help fight off viruses and bad bacteria. Benefits of Goat Milk
Although Americans traditionally drink cow’s milk, in most other countries goat milk is a staple of everyday life and many Americans are surprised to discover that it is actually much healthier and more nutritious than what they usually drink. Goat milk has a much higher protein content and also contains more calcium, Vitamin A, riboflavin, and good fat than cow milk–but at the same time, it is significantly lower in bad fat and cholesterol. In addition, it is gentle on the stomach and easy to digest, even for infants and those who are lactose intolerant. It is also one of the highest sources of biorganic sodium, an essential mineral that is important for a healthy digestive system and is thought to reduce the risk of arthritis. Benefits of Sheep Milk
Like goat milk, sheep milk is naturally more nutritious and healthy than cow’s milk—but even better, for it contains significantly higher levels of protein, calcium, Vitamins A, B, D,and E, zinc, magnesium, and phosphorous than goat’s milk. Although sheep milk is higher in fat than cow or goat milk, these are mainly heart healthy unsaturated fats that have no negative impact on cholesterol. Sheep milk also contains the highest concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) found in any type of milk. CLA is known to have cancer-fighting properties.
Sheep milk is gentle on the stomach and easy to digest, even for infants and those who are lactose intolerant—once again, even moreso than goat milk. Up to 75% of lactose intolerant people, even those who cannot tolerate goat milk, are able to drink sheep milk without any adverse side effects. Most people find sheep milk tastier than cow or goat milk: rich, sweet, and creamy without the slight tanginess of goat milk. Many who try sheep milk once never want to go back to anything else. For more information about the benefits of sheep milk, click here.
With all the nutrition of raw, organic milk combined with the added benefits of goat and sheep milk, our farm fresh milk is an excellent choice for your family! Please note that we do understand any caution you may have about raw milk, and will be happy to pasteurize it upon request.

Father’s Day Reflection
As a father, I reflect on what it means to me to be a father. I’ve now been a “dad” for more years than not. I can’t remember or imagine not being a father. I’m pleased and proud of what I’ve done in life and of the people I’ve befriended and the places I’ve been, of the individuals I’ve helped and those who’ve helped me. I think of the degrees I’ve attained and the titles that have come along with them. However, the title I enjoy most, like the great John Wayne, is “dad.” That title, and being a dad, has brought me more joy and definitely more pain than anything I would have believed as a single man. Being a father has made me more proud than anything in my life, and has also brought me more self-doubt than I have experienced from anything else in my life.
The pride that a father can feel for his child is the greatest pride. Likewise, nothing can make you more humble than the wonder that accompanies how to best be the model father one wishes to be. I often question “Did I handle that right?” These are the joys and sorrow which accompany love in any relationship. That bond that a father has toward his daughter(s) and/or son(s) is unlike any other. Once a father, always a father. And somehow, when a father thinks of his child, the pains that come with this ultimate responsibility are overshadowed by the love and gratification, potently inherent in that association.
I, as a father, do things for my kids, just as my father did many things for me, simply because they are my kids. There is no rhyme or reason why some parents love their children despite multiple indiscretions these children may have committed against their parents. The love a parent has toward his children is virtually instinctive, and very real.
Sincerely,
Dr. James G. Hood
or more profoundly…dad.
