4-H Group Meetings at Mountain Valley View Farm

Thursday, June 13, 2013 @ 11:06 AM
Author: Sibella

Welcome new members to our 4-H club here at Mountain Valley View Farm, Inc.! The name of our 4-H club is simply Mountain Valley View Farm 4-H Club, where we specialize in Leadership, Organic Farming, Icelandic Horses and more.

In the United States, 4-H is a youth organization administered by the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. The 4-H mission is “[…to] engage youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development.” The name represents four personal development areas of focus for the organization: head, heart, hands, and health.

The organization has over 6.5 million members in the United States ranging from ages five to nineteen in approximately 90,000 4-H clubs. Clubs and related organizations now exist in many other countries as well; the organization and administration varies from country to country.

The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, and life skills of youth through experiential learning programs. Though typically thought of as an agriculturally focused organization as a result of its history, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, and science, engineering, and technology.

Today 4-H and related programs exist in over 80 countries around the world. Each of these programs operates independently, but cooperatively through international exchanges, global education programs, and communications. Young people may participate in 4-H community or project clubs, special interest groups, or school enrichment programs. 4-H is available in towns and cities as well as in rural areas.

History

The foundations of 4-H began around the beginning of the twentieth century with several people contributing their ideas from different parts of the United States. The focal point of 4-H is and always has been through practical and hands-on learning, which comes from the desire to make public school education more connected to rural life. Early programs tied both public and private resources together to benefit rural youth.

The 4-H pledge is:

I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

The original pledge was written by Otis E. Hall of Kansas in 1918.

4-H Emblem:

The official 4-H emblem is a green four-leaf clover with a white H on each leaf standing for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. White and green are the 4-H colors. The white symbolizes purity and the green represents growth.

Mountain Valley View Farm, Inc. 4-H Group holds meetings during the summer months every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at our farm. During the school year, we meet every Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Our 4-H club has divisions of Leadership, Organic Farming, and Icelandic horses.

Mottled Houdan Chickens

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 @ 10:05 AM
Author: Sibella

The Houdan is an old breed of chicken native to France. It was raised extensively on the many small farms near the village of Houdan; and this locale and the lovely black plumage in which many feathers are tipped with V-shaped white spots give them their name. The flowing crest, V-shaped comb, muff of feathers at the throat, and the 5th toe give them an unusual appearance and make them a standout in any poultry show. With an attractive appearance, the Houdan combines a number of distinctive features, giving rise to speculation about the breeds that contributed to its development. The Crèvecœur or perhaps the Polish is suspected to have given the Houdan its crest, and either the Dorking or the native five-toed fowl of France is thought have to resulted in the Houdan’s five toes (most chickens have only four). Originally a dual–purpose fowl kept for both eggs and meat, the Houdan today is primarily a rare show bird. However, with a fairly quick rate of maturation and the ability to lay a respectable number of white eggs, it is still occasionally kept in backyard flocks. They are extremely docile and gentle and make good pets.

The Mottled Houdan chicken is just one of the many unique and beautiful birds you can see at Spokane’s premiere Petting Farm, brought to you by Mountain Valley View Farm.

Modern BB Red Game Chickens

Author: Sibella

Modern Games are a breed of poultry that were developed following the outlaw of cock fighting in Great Britain in 1849. They were developed from the Old English breed and have a unique, upright posture that distinguishes them from other chickens. They are used mainly for exhibition purposes and make wonderful birds for both children and adults to show and raise. Out of all the breeds of poultry, many people find the Modern Game to be the most entertaining and rewarding of the lot. They have a very friendly, spunky personality that has won the hearts of many, and their long legs make them fun to watch. Modern Games were featured in the first Standard of Perfection in 1874 and have since dominated the shows, residing in the top 10 most popular exhibition breeds.

Minorca Chickens

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 @ 12:05 PM
Author: Sibella

The Minorca chicken takes its name for the Island of Minorca, off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean, where it once could be found in large numbers. Spanish tradition relays that the breed came to Spain from Africa, with the Moors. In fact, it was sometimes referred to as the “Moorish fowl.” Minorca chickens are the largest of the Mediterranean class. They are non-sitters, excellent layers of large white eggs, and are very hardy and rugged birds. The breed has proven excellent on all soil types and adapts readily to range or confinement. In America, the breed made a name for itself due to its great egg laying ability combined with its hardiness and proclivity to excel on range.

The Minorca chicken is just one of the many unique and beautiful birds you can see at Spokane’s premiere Petting Farm, brought to you by Mountain Valley View Farm. We have both Black and Buff varieties.
